Aladin Concept Art 2_ Walt Disney Pictures and Walt Disney Feature Animation
Characters are the performers of your animation. They might not be good-looking, but they definitely need to be charming enough to seize your audiences’ attention.
As an animator, we can start with the simplest geometric shapes and play with the combinations. Shapes can convey a lot about the characters. Circles and rounded shapes mean harmony. Triangles are sharper and give off a dangerous look. The combination also says a lot about a character. For example, for a child, the head is usually proportionally larger.
Animation is your chance to create your own world! Your character can be exaggerated and different from reality. Try to transform and exaggerate the figure or to add contradictory elements to a character - the results might be surprising!
There are a lot of elements to experiment with! For beginners, you can start with simple shapes and lines. Character design is a broadly creative subject; don’t get frustrated if your first draft doesn’t work out!
