How to Take Effective Outline Notes

The outlining method of taking notes is used widely by students; it is simple, effective, and straightforward! Essentially, an outline is a “skeleton” of a particular subject or textbook chapter that serves as an excellent reference and guide when studying. NoteLedge is fully equipped to help you with your outlining needs!

Pros and Cons of Outline Method

Pros: It allows notes to be neatly organized in chronological order. It is also easy to see the relationship between topics and subtopics, and works well for history, humanities, and english courses. Using the outlining method when reading through a unit or topic makes it easy to turn important points into study questions.

Cons: The outline method isn’t the best for STEM classes such as math or chemistry, since more equations, graphs, or formulas would need to be drawn in your notes.

How to Take Outline Notes - Step-by-Step

  1. If you would like to take your notes on lined paper, change “Paper Style” under settings to the lined option.
  2. Start with a big header — this could be your topic name, chapter title, or general subject. In this example, the header is “Aztec Culture & History,” with a “World History II” subheading. This can help with organizing your notes.
  3. While reading through your chapter or even listening to a lecture, take note of the big ideas. These will be your broader terms. Indent and type relevant information under each big idea — NoteLedge offers a whole toolkit of different bullet points or numbers to use.
  4. After you’re done typing your content, you may add relevant diagrams, pictures, or even extra handwritten notes to polish off the outline.
  5. That’s it! Share with your classmates or teacher by clicking the share button in the top right corner.
